Written by USC Professor of History William Deverell, Whitewashed Adobe looks at the rise of LA through shifting ideas of race and ethnicity. Deverell highlights six stories in LA's early history, including the cementing of the LA River and the 1924 outbreak of bubonic plague, and shows how the Americanization of this Mexican town included racial strife and the simultaneous appropriation and attempted elimination of its Mexican people and culture.
